The Baobab Tree – Poem To My Grandpa

Its leafy canopy offered shade for weary travellers the baobab tree
Its gnarled trunk betraying age old wisdom transcending galaxies
Younger Acacias sprouted around it telling wild tales and incredible falacies
But forever rooted in tradition the old giant opened his roof and made them see
The world for what it was,a blank page to write one’s story unrestrained forever free
His milky fruit gave his offspring’s rumbling tummies hope
Some were thankful used the succulent fruit to fuel their ascent to the top
The foolish were greedy packaging his produce then setting up shop
Unknowingly selling their souls exchanging their heritage,gifts given freely for them to cope
With a cold world bearing allegience to the cult of dog eat dog
Till he reminded them of self worth and the doctrine of we are all we got
He lived many years but at long last the grim reaper wielded his axe
Even as they paid their last respects
They could not help but notice how the serenity he exhuded in life had accompanied him to his death
The forest was forlon his branches nolonger home to chirping birds
The whispers of wisdom in his leaves leaving earth as he drew his last breath
But the story of his generosity is forever etched
In many a young heart so even in death
My grandfather the Baobab tree is our guardian angel and in his eternal embrace we are forever blessed.
